Our May 17th winner in our continuing Photo of the Day contest has been chosen! This image was chosen from the landscapes and general nature thread in the forum. Congratulations Tony!

This image has wonderful color and clarity and the trees are reminiscent of a painting. The dog makes the viewer look again as its inclusion throws off the flattened perspective created by the reflections. The result is rather surrealistic in style. The only quibble with this image is that the horizon line is not quite straight and leaves viewers tilting their heads slightly to the left.

This image nicely uses a simple subject and plain background to draw the viewer into a small world we rarely pay attention to. The highlights on the white fibers are a nice contrast, as are the two seeds in the back that are not vertical.

This image is a great example of how light and color can change and image. The harmonious earth tones are intensified by the sunlight. The yellow sunlight blends well with the color of the scene while the light intensity is controlled so that the scene does not leave the viewer feeling the scene is overbright.

This image is a great example of how IR photography can change a somewhat everyday scene into something fantastic! The image uses good compositional rules such as the rule of thirds (the heron is at an intersection point) and the reflection of the trees adds a nice interest point to draw the eye up to the boat and house in the trees.

This image nicely captures a face off between two bluebirds. The loser is ducking away from the winner who stands threateningly over him. Capturing animal/bird behavior is often as important as compositional rules when trying for a compelling photograph. This image also makes good use of compositional rules such as the rule of thirds (winning bird's eye on top horizontal line and losing bird's body near a vertical line). The image also uses a shallow depth of field to isolate the birds from the background and draw further attention to the behavior.

This image uses a large depth of field to help us see into what the dog may be looking at. The dog's body is nicely on a horizontal line from the rule of thirds and this leads us to the dog's face and on to imagine what may be so interesting to the canine. I would have liked to see the dog's nose a little higher than the distant land in the image though.

This image is a great action shot of an unusual sort. Herons do not often allow photographers to get very close to them. They also tend to prefer calmer water for their fishing. The unusualness of the image subject helps to capture attention immediately. The bird's head is positioned near a vertical line using the rule of thirds while still giving room for the action to occur on either side of the bird so that we get a full appreciation of the situation. The motion is captured at a moment of impact and leaves the viewer feeling that the action will continue any moment.

This image nicely illustrates the life cycle of a blooming flower. By using shallow depth of field, leading lines, and the rule of thirds, the photographer draws our attention to the fully opened blossom first but still allows the viewer to explore the progression from bud to bloom.
